Opening titles: Polyamory? What does this mean to you?

Engaging the audience immediately, the documentary will launch instantly into cross cutting vox-pops of the general public answering this question. This will establish societies perception of the elusive lifestyle of a polyamory.

From this point forward, we are taken on the journey through the perspective of two groups who lead a polyamory lifestyle, one situated in the UK and another in the U.S. Social views vary by country and culture, therefore it would be interesting to view the contrast in social acceptance, support and alternative lifestyles that may or may not vary between the two countries. The programme will be unfolded in categories (which reflects to title of programme)

Layout of programme will be broken down like so:

Introductions ‘Who’s Who’-  Introductions from both parties, we learn a little about them, where they’re from, and how they became involved in a Polyamorous relationship.

Chapter.1 ‘ Rules of Engagement’ – Fidelity and Loyalty : Following the introductions of our characters, we will discover that although Polyamory involves ‘multi-love’, the values of fidelity and loyalty are important values to the relationship, and the ‘rules of engagement’.

Chapter.2 – Trust, honesty, dignity and respect: Discuss the Poly Pride Flag, and what this represents. Explore how polyamory differs from other labels of ‘multi-relations’ (e.g. ‘dogging, swinging’) Polyamory involves intimacy, trust and most importantly companionships, which is the most critical difference to sex based social groups.

Chapter.3 – Mutual support: We will witness our character attend support groups, and other social networking events, or online groups/web sources which will represent other couples, groups who are also committed to this lifestyle. 

Chapter.4 – Communication and negotiation: How families/society perceive their choice of this lifestyle, and whether this has effected them in any way. (It will be interesting to see whether different cultures disapprove more so than others.

Chapter.5 – Non-possessiveness: Reflect on past relationships before entering a polyamory relationship, express whether they believe that a Polyamorous relation is the new ‘Sexual Revelation’? 

Theme

The theme of the documentary focuses on the misunderstood relationships of polyamory, and the important values that allow the non-monogamous relationships to work. People are easy to judge this misunderstood lifestyle, and easily brush it off as a ‘sex based’/nymphomaniac obsession. I hope this documentary will capture Polyamory in a different light, which can only be carried by the stories tole by the characters, and the journeys they have been through leading this lifestyle. 

Narrative

The narrative of the documentary will expectantly develop as we the audience become voyeurs of two groups who believe that polyamory is the way forward for stable relationships. We will learn exactly what defines a polyamory relationship, and how the term has become lost in translation with such labels as ‘swinging’ and ‘dogging’. What I hope to capture in this documentary, are how important the values of these relationships are, which ironically may be more wholesome than a monogamous relationship.

Characters

Ideally I would like to have a middle age threesome from the UK, who is on the voyage for another partner in their relationship. The other characters from the US would be a couple, in a polyamorus relationship, who have a child.What we hope to capture is how the term polyamory is represented in different countries and whether there is the same level of support.

Documentaries are viewed to learn, enjoy, and engage. The theme of this documentary is contemporary, rarely explored, and explorative of a lifestyle which is misunderstood, or even unheard of by most people. I believe that this would interest a broad audience. Relationships is a theme than can be related to on many levels, and the stories told within the documentary can also appeal to other polyamory followers.
