Broadcasters Remits

Whilst generating our ideas we were asked to consider carefully our choice of Broadcaster, and whether our ideas met the need of the Commissioners. In order to remind myself exactly what each Broadcaster wants, and their styles of online interaction, I have created a page in order to re-iterate the individuality between each Broadcaster, and why my programme would meet their need.

BBC1 –  ”Inform, educate and entertain”

BBC mission

To enrich people’s lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain.

Our vision

To be the most creative organisation in the world.

Our values

  • Trust is the foundation of the BBC: we are independent, impartial and honest.
  • Audiences are at the heart of everything we do.
  • We take pride in delivering quality and value for money.
  • Creativity is the lifeblood of our organisation.
  • We respect each other and celebrate our diversity so that everyone can give their best.
  • We are one BBC: great things happen when we work together.

BBC2 –  ”To provide more niche programming”

BBC3 – ‘The remit of BBC Three is to bring younger audiences to high-quality public service broadcasting through a mixed-genre schedule of innovative UK content featuring new UK talent. The channel should use the full range of digital platforms to deliver its content and to build an interactive relationship with its audience’

S4C – To provide a service which is in the Welsh language in peak viewing hours. S4C does not produce programmes of its own; instead, it commissions programmes in Welsh from the BBC and independent producers

CHANNEL 4 - The Broadcasting Act 1990 gives Channel 4 a specific remit requiring Channel 4 programmes to “contain a suitable proportion of matter calculated to appeal to tastes and interests not generally catered for by Channel 3 and that innovation and experiment in the form and content of those programmes (should be) encouraged”. The Channel 4 service should also have a “distinctive character”. The Broadcasting Act requires Channel 4 to provide a public service for disseminating information, education and entertainment. Programmes must also maintain a high general standard and a wide range; provide a proportion of educational programmes, high quality news and current affairs and include proportions which are European and are supplied by independent producers. This remit has been largely unchanged since the Broadcasting Act 1981.
